Медицинский сленг на английском

Всем привет! Сегодня мы поговорим о медицинском сленге на английском языке. Надо отметить, что сленг на английском схож с русским, мы используем те же слова, но на русском языке. Итак, давайте приступим к рассмотрению. Мы посмотрим на само слово, его значение на английском и переводом на русский язык, а так же применение его в предложениях.

albatross
a chronically ill patient who will remain in hospital until they die
хронически больной пациент, который останется в больнице до самой смерти
"We try to provide comfort to the albatrosses, even though we cannot cure them."

appy
an appendicitis, or an appendix
аппендицит или аппендикс
"He presented complaining of an appy."

bounceback
a patient who is readmitted to hospital after being discharged
пациент, который повторно госпитализирован после выписки
"If a doctor gets too many bouncebacks, it raises questions over his original diagnosis"
Можно рассмотреть дословный перевод:
"bounce" отскакивать и "back" назад. Дословно – отскакивающий назад

circle the drain
to be close to death
быть близким к смерти
"She was circling the drain when I left last night so I wasn't surprised to hear she had passed away."
“Сircle” круг, кругом. ‘Drain’ водосток, канализация.

code brown
a fecal emergency, incontinence
чрезвычайная ситуация с фекалиями, недержание мочи
"Most nurses dread hearing the words code brown."
‘Сode’ - код, ‘brown’ - коричневый

departure lounge
the geriatrics ward
отделение гериатии
"Working in the departure lounge requires a lot of patience and empathy."
‘Departure’ - отправление
‘lounge’ - холл

discharged up
to pass away, die
умереть
"Two patients were discharged up last night so we have two free beds."
Еще одно значение у данного фразового глагола, которое и принесло ему данный смысл - это ‘разряжаться’

frequent flyer
a patient who spends a lot of time at hospital, is frequently admitted
пациент, который проводит много времени в больнице, часто госпитализируется
"Everyone at the hospital knows Mary, she is a real frequent flyer"
“frequent” - частый, часто встречающийся, постоянный

gatekeeper
an administrative doctor whose job it is to reduce costs by only admitting emergency cases, or those with suitable insurance
административный врач, чья работа заключается в снижении затрат, только допуская экстренные случаи или те, где есть подходящая страховка
"As the gatekeeper, he decides who should be admitted and who should not."
“Gatekeeper” - сторож, “gate” - ворота, “keep” - хранить

get hammered
to have a large number of admissions while on duty
большое количество поступающих во время дежурства
"A&E departments usually get hammered on Friday and Saturday nights."
Прямой перевод - “забить.”
Но если говорить о сленге, то еще одно значение, которое может быть озвучено, правда не относящееся к медицине - это “напиться / нажраться”.

puppies
interns or residents
стажеры или резиденты
"All puppies should be present for rounds at 8am."
Ну здесь все просто:
“puppy” - “щенок”

goldbrick
a patient who demands more time than their condition deserves
пациент, который требует больше времени, чем заслуживает его состояние
"He only had a slight temperature but from the way he was complaining you would have thought he was going to die - what a goldbrick!"

shotgunning
ordering a wide variety of tests in the hope one of them will show what is wrong with a patient
заказывая самые разнообразные тесты в надежде, что один из них покажет, что не так с пациентом
"The doctors had no idea what was wrong with the patient so resorted to shotgunning."

slasher
a surgeon
хирург
"Slashers have a reputation of being less intelligent than doctors, but this is rarely true."
“Slash” порезать, перерезать

turf
to get rid of a patient by referring them to another ward / team / doctor
чтобы избавиться от пациента, направив его в другую палату / команду / врача
"It is not uncommon for a problem patient to be turfed from one department to another until they are discharged."
“Turf” - территория, район, сфера влияния.

velcro
relatives or friends who stay with a patient at all times
родственники или друзья, которые постоянно находятся с пациентом
"Other patients in the ward felt uncomfortable because of her velcro who stayed with her around the clock."
“velcro” - липучка

zebra
an obscure diagnosis when a more commonplace diagnosis is more likely
неясный диагноз, когда более распространенный диагноз более вероятен
Так же, естественно, есть слова, которые применяются только на английском и вы не услышите (скорее всего) их в российских больницах:

wallet biopsy
the process of confirming a patients insurance before admission to hospital
процесс подтверждения страховки пациентов перед поступлением в стационар
“wallet” - бумажник, портмоне

LPN (low paid nurse)
a play on words with the term LPN Licensed Practical Nurse
игра на словах с термином LPN - лицензированная практикующая медсестра
"I'll get one of the LPNs to give her a sponge bath, I certainly am not going to do it myself."

noctor
a junior nurse who thinks she is a doctor
младшая медсестра, которая думает, что она доктор
"One of the most annoying things for doctors is dealing with noctors who think they know more than the doctor does."
